Financial Abuse of the Elderly

Persons over the age of 50 control 70% of the wealth in our country.  Because seniors are perceived as slowing down mentally or, in the case of those who are either recently widowed or divorced, as being unsophisticated in handling their finances, they are often targets of financial abuse.  In an internal memo produced in a case in which we were involved regarding selling financial products to seniors, the author noted at the bottom, “And always remember the weak, the meek and the ignorant were always good targets.”  Humboldt County is no different than the rest of the state, and seniors in

Megan Yarnall Admitted to Oregon State Bar

Janssen associate attorney Megan Yarnall was recently admitted to the Oregon State Bar after passing the Oregon bar exam last winter. The Janssen Law Firm represents clients in personal injury, civil and criminal defense, estate planning, and other matters throughout Northern California, including  Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Mendocino, and Siskiyou Counties. Bike Law 101: Beyond the Safety Corridor

May was Bike Awareness Month, with crowds of people gathering in Eureka and Arcata for bike to work rallies on designated bike to work days.  In a timely proposal, the City of Eureka is also considering installing striped bicycle lanes on Harris Street, providing additional bicycle friendly streets, but reducing the number of parking spaces available on Harris.  The Parking Place Commission will be discussing the issue at their public meeting in City Hall this Thursday (June 9, 2011, 4:40 p.m.).
