Californians - Bills for New Fire Protection Fee

Approximately 825,000 California property owners, many in Humboldt County, will soon receive bills for a new Fire Prevention Benefit Fee.  All land owners whose property contains a habitable structure in the California State Responsibility Area (SRA) are subject to the fee, which amounts to $150 per habitable structure.  The Fire Prevention Fee results from legislation passed in July of 2011, aimed to reduce California’s budget deficit, generate General Fund savings, and to fund fire prevention services within the SRA.

California Lawsuits - Suspended Companies

A California Corporation or Limited Liability Company (“LLC”) can be suspended for a number of reasons, including the nonpayment of taxes under California Revenue and Taxation Code or for their failure to file updated information under the Corporations Code.

When a corporation or LLC is suspended, it loses its rights and privileges under California law.  Thus, the company cannot legally operate until revived (reinstated) with the Secretary of State.

Improvements in "Nursing Home Compare" Site

One in seven Americans age 65 and older will spend time in one of the nation’s 16,000 nursing homes this year, and for those 85 and older the chances are more than one in five.  That adds up to about 3.3 million Americans.

To help patients and their families choose a nursing home and compare between different types of homes, the federal government hosts a web site called “Nursing Home Compare”.

Janssen Malloy LLP's Building Renovation Project

Janssen Malloy LLP has been in the process of renovating its building, which sits adjacent to the Humboldt County Courthouse in downtown Eureka.  Constructed in the late 1950's, the historic building originally housed separate individual law offices, reflecting an earlier time when solo law practice was much more common than it is today.  As the Janssen Law Firm expanded over the years in numbers of attorneys, paralegal and support staff, it gradually took over almost all the space of the two story building.
