The California DMV released a list of new laws and changes to existing laws affecting drivers and other users of California roadways. Among the listed provisions, which can be found here(link is external) are restrictions on the use of earbuds or other head phone devices. While the law previously prohibited the use of headphones that covered a driver or cyclist’s ears, the new law makes it unlawful to wear a headset covering, earplugs in, or earphones covering, resting on, or inserted in, both ears while operating a motor vehicle or bicycle. The prohibition does not apply to persons operating authorized emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and waste management equipment while wearing a headset or safety earplugs. New laws affecting electric bicycles and skate boards, pedicabs, and “hover boards” also went into effect at the first of the year.
